Gary Tully '71 was a standout player in a fiercely competitive CHSAA basketball league, known for his toughness, leadership, and remarkable skill on the court. His career began with being named MVP of the freshman team, a distinction he would earn again as a senior, though not in his junior year, when his brother Jim claimed the honor. As team captain in his senior season, Gary averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds per game, earning third-team All-CHSAA honors and drawing interest from colleges like William & Mary, Iona, and Marist.

Gary’s path led him to Colgate, where he earned a full scholarship based on a combination of academics, athletics, and financial considerations, thanks in part to the advice of his brother, Jay. His athletic career was cut short by injuries, but he went on to have a successful career in the Property Casualty Insurance industry, always crediting his experiences at Xaverian for shaping his success in both business and life.

"Gary Tully was a warrior," recalled teammate Charlie Johnston. "Our team had a bunch of very good players with Gary being our star, but the competition was always intense. No one played with more desire and toughness. His presence was what made us respectable."
